ANIMALS
  • Animals are adapted to handle cold winters and to breed and raise young quickly in the short artic summer.
  • Some adaptations are short legs; long hair; a coat of thick fur;short tails, and large furry feet.
  • Some animals will dig up roots in the spring because there is still snow on the ground.
  • Most tundra animals have compact bodies to keep in warmth.

PLANTS
  • Tundra plants grow, flower, and set seed quickly. They have to, in order to pack all their activity into the short artic growing season.
  • Artic tundra plants are adapted to carry on photosynthesis and to grow at cool temperatures.
  • Their shoots grow best at 27F to 36F, cooler than plants in the temperate zone.
  • Most plants in the tundra are dark and hairy. This helps them attract sunlight faster.

THE TUNDRA CLIMATE

  • Precipatation averages about six to ten inches of rain a year.
  • The average temperature is between 45F and 10F.
  • The tundra has long days in the summer.
  • The tundra has a soil called permafrost or permanently frozen soil, so very few trees grow in the tundra biome.
